Regional Environmental Enrichment Conferences

UK and Ireland REEC

The second UK and Ireland Regional Environmental Enrichment Conference was held at Bristol Zoo Gardens, UK from the 20th to the 22nd of April 2008.  The meeting was a great success with around 80 delegates from a number of different institutions attending. In addition to over 20 talks on a variety of topics; from enrichment for echidnas, aye-ayes and seahorses to how to enrich animals whilst in quarantine.  Dr Amy Plowman repeated the workshop on A Keeper's Guide to Evaluating Enrichment (to download the PDF please click here), and followed up with the second workshop of the series 'Enrichment Schedules and Presenting your Results'.

The conference also included a workshop on rope splicing, a scrapheap challenge to make an enrichment device and a '10 enrichments in 10 minutes' game show.  The discussion session covered the topics of food versus non-food enrichments, edible versus inedible enrichment device materials and the sue of natural versus non-natural enrichments.  The notes from these discussions will be available on this website soon.

The conference was a great success, thanks to all who attended, Bristol Zoo Gardens for their organisation and hospitality and the REEC committee for their hard work.

The conference proceedings will be available to download on this website  soon so watch this space.
