Regional Environmental Enrichment Conferences

  ICEE 2009- About the conference

Seeking to Invent new ways to Create opportunities for natural behaviours, Enrich the lives of our animals and Evaluate the results.

The International Conference on Environmental Enrichment is where experts gather to discuss and learn more about the issues related to enriching the lives of captive animals. How can enrichment be integrated into animal housing and husbandry? How can we advance our understanding of its implications and efficacy through research? This week-long conference will be challenging, provocative and lively.

Who should attend?                            We aim to attract several hundred professionals working with captive animals from around the world. Delegates from a range of zoos, academic institutions and conservation bodies will be joined by colleagues from animal sanctuaries, research laboratories, agriculture and the companion animal sector.

The event will interest those with practical experience and those with academic backgrounds. Professionals working in the field of captive animal housing and husbandry, for example, zoo designers and architects, nutritionists and educators, will also find it informative and rewarding.

Environmental enrichment      Environmental enrichment is all about stimulating animals mentally and physically and helping to promote animal welfare and the best possible quality of life within a managed environment. It is an exciting and dynamic discipline busy with innovation, creativity and study.

The venue                              Conferences are held every two years; recent venues have been New York and Vienna - the ninth conference will be hosted by Paignton Zoo Environmental Park between Sunday 31st May and Friday 5th June 2009. The event will be held at the Riviera International Conference Centre, Torquay.

The region                                      Devon is an attractive rural county in the South West of England. Known for its dramatic coastline, sandy beaches, attractive landscapes and pretty villages, it is a popular holiday destination well-served by communication links – including Exeter International Airport, just 40 kilometres (25 miles) away. Click here for information from the English Riviera Tourist Board about the area.

The conference                                   The conference will start with registration and an icebreaker function on the Sunday followed by five days of presentations. There will be evening boat trips around Torbay harbour, an evening bird watching trip, an afternoon tour of Paignton Zoo Environmental Park and evening barbeque at the Zoo. The week will conclude with a gala banquet to mark the end of the event. The days will mix talks and workshops with practical demonstrations and lively debate.

Sponsorship

The conference is a great opportunity to bring the South West of England to the world. We want to use the week as a showcase for local food and drink, tourism and enterprise. Additionally, the conference will have the same strong environmental ethos as the hosts, Paignton Zoo Environmental Park.

A variety of sponsorship opportunities are on offer to give businesses the chance to put their name, their products and services in front of a whole new audience. Stalls are available within the venue itself throughout the week.
